Wolverhampton’s city centre cinema celebrates anniversary after welcoming over 70,000 movie goers

Wolverhampton’s city centre Lockworks Cinema celebrates its 1 year anniversary tomorrow (Saturday) having seen more than 70,000 visitors pass through its doors.

The refurbished 4 screen venue, inside the historic Grade II-listed Chubb Building, screened its first films on Friday 11 July, 2025, and continues to deliver the latest Hollywood blockbusters and more.

To celebrate its birthday, Lockworks has a special £5 offer on tickets this Saturday (11 July) for all seats and screens.

Experienced independent commercial operator, PDJ, converted the 8,000sqft council owned space from an out dated 2 screen venue to a state of the art facility, providing a luxury offer to movie goers at affordable prices.

Not only is it a place for family fun, but it has helped change the lives of residents in the area by creating 23 job opportunities for local people.

PDJ and the council made a £2 million joint investment in the critical refurbishment and fit out programme of the Lockworks Cinema and entered into a 30 year lease.

Councillor Stephen Simkins, City of Wolverhampton Council Leader, said: “What a fantastic first year it has been for Lockworks Cinema, which has become a major attraction in our visitor economy – and big congratulations to our partner PDJ and all the cinema staff.

“It is all part of our city centre transformation, creating new destinations, better public spaces and inner city living opportunities, coupled to a broader entertainment and events programme.

“The cinema, working alongside popular venues like the art gallery, Grand Theatre and University of Wolverhampton at The Halls, all drive footfall to support local businesses.”

The council also worked closely with the Chubb Building landlord, Midlands Industrial Association (MIA), who oversee a range of businesses already within the buildings, to bring forward the cinema scheme.
