Free flu vaccines available for 2 and 3 year olds at pharmacies

Children aged 2 and 3 can now become Flu Fighters this autumn, with free nasal flu vaccinations available at GPs and selected community pharmacies across Wolverhampton from now until 31 March.

Parents and carers are encouraged to act quickly to protect their little ones – and the wider family – from flu this winter. Flu can be serious for young children, with under-5s among those most likely to be hospitalised due to complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia. They can also spread it to more vulnerable relatives.

The nasal spray flu vaccine is quick, painless and needle free, making it ideal for most children aged 2 and 3. For children who cannot have the nasal spray due to medical or faith reasons, a gelatine free injectable alternative is available via their GP.

Vaccinations can be booked online at Children’s flu vaccine and people can find a participating pharmacy at Vaccination and booking services. Walk-in appointments are also available at selected pharmacies across the city.

Councillor Obaida Ahmed, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, said: “Flu spreads easily and can be dangerous, especially for young children and vulnerable family members.

“The free nasal flu vaccine is the best way to protect your child and those around them. It’s quick, safe and for most children, it’s just a gentle spray up the nose – no needles required.

“Getting vaccinated in the autumn gives children the best protection before flu season begins. It takes a couple of weeks for the vaccine to take full effect, so don’t delay.”

Meanwhile, all school children from Reception to Year 11, including those who are home educated, are eligible for the vaccination again this year. Vaccinations will be given by healthcare professionals from Vaccination UK in school and catch up clinics will also be available at various locations around Wolverhampton and the Black Country.

Schools are providing information about the vaccine to families of eligible children, and parents and guardians are encouraged to complete the online consent form as soon as possible to ensure their child doesn’t miss out.

Consent can be given via the online form available at Flu Immunisation 2025/26, which is available in a number of different languages. Verbal consent can be given by calling Vaccination UK on 01902 200077. Requests for the injectable vaccination can be made when giving consent.
