Help prevent the spread of winter vomiting bug

Residents in Wolverhampton are being reminded of the simple steps they can take to protect themselves and others from norovirus – commonly known as the winter vomiting bug.

Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes sickness and diarrhoea. While cases are not currently high, the virus tends to circulate more during colder months and can spread quickly in places where people have close contact, such as schools, hospitals and care homes.

Symptoms include feeling sick, vomiting and diarrhoea, but can also include a raised temperature, stomach pain and aching limbs. Most people recover within 2 to 3 days without needing medicine, but young children, older adults and those with weakened immunity may experience more severe and prolonged illness.

The virus spreads easily through hand to mouth contact, touching contaminated surfaces, or eating food prepared by someone who is infected, so good hand hygiene is vital to reduce spread of infection. Norovirus can survive on surfaces for days or even weeks, making it important to properly clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces using a bleach based solution.

Councillor Obaida Ahmed, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, said: “Norovirus is highly contagious, and even when cases are low, it’s important we all do our bit to stop it spreading. Washing your hands regularly with soap and warm water is the most effective way to protect yourself and others.

“If you do catch norovirus, please stay at home until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped, and avoid preparing food for others during this time. This helps prevent passing the infection on to family, friends and colleagues.”

Anyone concerned about symptoms should contact their GP by phone or call NHS 111. Further advice on norovirus, including how to care for yourself or a family member at home, is available at NHS | Norovirus (vomiting bug).
