It follows City of Wolverhampton Council’s announcement that it is set to invest £10 million in resurfacing the city’s roads and other highways improvements over the next 12 months.
Additional round the clock and weekend repairs and inspections will continue until Spring after severe winter weather has battered roads around the country, with fluctuating temperatures causing greater wear and tear on surfaces.
Alongside repairing hundreds of potholes every week, the council is also heavily focused on long term preventative improvements such as resurfacing and surface dressing – with dozens more roads to benefit in 2026/27 through the proposed Highway Capital Programme.
This work helps prolong the life of roads, reducing the need for as many urgent fixes.
Over the last 5 years the council has carried out resurfacing or surface treatments on 560 km² of carriageway, with fewer main roads now in need of urgent repair.
Many roads were given a new lease of life through resurfacing and other improvements in last year’s £9.7 million Highway Capital Programme including Cannock Road, Neachells Lane, Wellington Road, Lichfield Street in Bilston and others.
This year more roads including Chapel Ash Island, Ring Road St George’s, Stafford Road Three Tuns Lane Roundabout, Wobaston Road/Droveway, Mander Street, Price Street and others will be resurfaced.
Many more will benefit from surface dressing and other treatments in 2026/27 – which are quick to do and prevent potholes forming.
The full list of roads in line for improvements in 2026/27 to date can be seen below and the public will be kept informed on a schedule of works once confirmed – with resurfacing carried out overnight where possible. Many footpaths will also be resurfaced.
With approximately 480 miles of roads and 800 miles of footpaths to maintain, the council cannot resurface everything at once. The Asphalt Industry Alliance estimated in its 2025 report that a one time catch up would cost approximately £129.2 million per authority in England, excluding London.
As such, City of Wolverhampton Council prioritises resurfacing and treatments where they can have the greatest impact, using detailed data from road condition scans and inspections to inform decisions.
Councillor Qaiser Azeem, Cabinet Member for City Transport, said: “Winter always presents a challenge for road maintenance with a high volume of enquiries coming in, but our teams are meeting the challenge head on, working day and night to keep the network safe.
“While we know reactive repairs will always have to be done, we are investing heavily in measures to prevent potholes forming, as we have seen with the resurfacing and other surface treatments that have already been carried out.
“This type of work will help to further improve the condition of our roads and ensure a safe and efficient highways network for all.”
More than 2 thirds of roadworks in Wolverhampton are carried out by utility companies. The council closely coordinates and monitors this activity, issuing fines when companies fail to follow agreed rules which are also reinvested into repairing roads and tackling potholes.
Residents can report a pothole, provide feedback on road maintenance and view the city’s live roadworks map using the links below.
The 2026/27 Highway Capital Programme also includes improvements to footpaths, street lighting, car park upgrades and more. It is due to go before Cabinet for approval on 18 February.
