Statement – shooting in Whitmore Reans

The City of Wolverhampton Council is working to support West Midlands Police after the tragic shooting in Whitmore Reans in the early hours of Friday 19 September.

Duaine Mills, 28, died at the scene of the attack on Leicester Street, and a second man who was injured, Syed Zain Ali, passed away in hospital on Wednesday surrounded by his family.

West Midlands Police are asking for help in tracing a potential suspect, 38 year old Mohammed Maneer Khan, also known as Manny, who they would like to speak to as part of the double murder investigation. Anyone who sees him is asked not to approach him but to call 999 immediately.

Anyone with information which may help the investigation is asked to call police on 101 quoting log 358 of 19 September, or contact Crimestoppers completely anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Local police neighbourhood teams are carrying out additional patrols in the area to offer reassurance.

Police will also have Section 60 powers in place across the as part of their efforts to keep everyone safe and reassured, allowing them to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds. The powers will be in place as shown on the map from 6pm this evening until 2am tomorrow (Saturday 27 September).

Local Police Inspector Martin Danher said: “We do understand and appreciate that such a serious incident will be cause for concern for many in our community.

“Officers from our St Peter’s and Park team and the wider city have stepped up their patrols and are out in the area, so please do stop and speak to them.

“We know that we owe it to these 2 men to bring justice for their loved ones and we’d ask the public to help our ongoing efforts to bring Khan into custody.”

Councillor Stephen Simkins, Leader of the City of Wolverhampton Council, added: “The tragic incident which occurred in Whitmore Reans has come as a shock to the community.

“A police investigation is underway, and I would encourage anyone with any information which may help them identify the perpetrator or perpetrators to contact police in confidence as soon as possible.

“What happened is not representative of our great city and, as a responsible council, we remain committed to working with the police and other organisations to make our streets safer.”
