The event, held at the City Learning Quarter, recognised students who had demonstrated outstanding improvement, personal progression and a commitment to going above and beyond in their learning journeys.
The Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Paul Singh and Mayoress Ranjit Dhillon-Kaur attended the ceremony and presented certificates to students nominated by teachers.
Among those recognised was 2025-26 Star Award winner Lisa Gilliatt, whose determination, resilience and willingness to help others have made her an inspiring role model, while Kerim Rahahala was praised for transforming challenges into achievement through a strong belief in the power of education.
Other award recipients included Becks Duroe, who has gained the confidence to travel independently, volunteer at Wolverhampton Art Gallery and inspire others through their community spirit; Shamba Malcom, who developed from student to confident digital citizen; and James Emtage, whose return to education after a long break enabled him to gain qualifications, improve his digital skills and grow in confidence.
Winnie McCool was recognised for progressing from having no experience of smartphones, computers or online services to using digital technology independently, while Samiaa Hussain was celebrated for overcoming health challenges, housing uncertainty and language barriers to achieve multiple qualifications and transform her future through education.
Ben Hunt’s journey from a quiet student lacking confidence in social situations to a successful Level 3 IT learner and dedicated volunteer demonstrated the life-changing impact of adult learning, while Sally Adey’s commitment, work ethic and willingness to support fellow students made her stand out among her peers.
Meanwhile, Gurdeep Mann was given the Above and Beyond Award in recognition for taking learning beyond the classroom, successfully coordinating and helping to curate a professional exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, creating an opportunity for fellow students to showcase their talents.
Councillor Paula Brookfield, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills and Opportunities, said: “The Celebration of Learning is one of the highlights of the year because it showcases the extraordinary achievements of adult students from across our city.
“Everyone recognised at this event has overcome challenges, embraced new opportunities and demonstrated what can be achieved through determination, hard work and a commitment to learning.
“Their stories show that learning can change lives at any age, helping people gain confidence, develop new skills, improve their employment prospects and achieve personal goals.
“I would like to congratulate everyone who received recognition and thank all our staff for the support they provide to learners throughout their educational journey.”
The event came ahead of a series of open days at Adult Education Wolverhampton’s City Learning Quarter base, giving prospective students the opportunity to explore courses, meet tutors and find out more about the support available.
Open days will take place on Wednesdays 5, 12 and 19 August from 10am to 3pm, Monday 24 to Friday 28 August from 10am to 3pm, Tuesday 2 September from 10am to 7pm, Wednesday 3 September from 10am to 3pm and Thursday 4 September from 10am to 3pm.
