Praise for Highfields School after Ofsted inspection success

Staff and pupils at Highfields School are celebrating a positive Ofsted inspection which highlighted strong pupil achievement, excellent behaviour and a highly inclusive school community.

Inspectors visited the school, part of Lykos Multi Academy Trust, earlier this year and, in their report published recently, praised the high standards reached by pupils, the strength of relationships across the school, and leaders’ clear ambition for every child to succeed.

The report found that ‘pupils achieve very well across the curriculum’, with high outcomes at Key Stage 4 and the progress of many pupils ‘significantly above national averages’. Disadvantaged pupils ‘perform especially well’. Pupils build their knowledge over time, do ‘really well from their starting points’ and ‘are successfully prepared for their next steps’.

Attendance and behaviour were identified as key strengths. Inspectors said that ‘pupils enjoy attending the school’ and described the school’s work on attendance as ‘very successful’. Meanwhile, pupil behaviour is ‘excellent’, with relationships between pupils and staff ‘warm and respectful’.

The school’s inclusive ethos is a defining feature. Inspectors noted that ‘leaders articulate an ambitious, inclusive vision’ and that pupils value the support available to them and ‘prosper within a culture of high expectations and successful inclusion’.

Leaders have designed an ‘ambitious curriculum’ which equips pupils with essential knowledge and skills for the future. Teaching supports pupils to make strong progress, with reading identified as a priority. Teachers understand the individual needs of pupils, while adaptations typically address any challenges pupils may face.

Leadership was praised as ‘effective and cohesive’, with ‘a clear strategic vision that reflects the school’s inclusive and vibrant ethos’. Staff morale is strong, with inspectors noting that ‘staff report high job satisfaction’ and ‘are proud to work at the school’.

The school’s wider work to support pupils’ development was also highlighted. Leaders have created a personal development programme that ‘underpins the school’s ambitious and inclusive culture’, alongside a wide range of enrichment opportunities that help broaden pupils’ experiences.

Inspectors also recognised the positive experiences of pupils themselves, finding that ‘pupils enjoy being part of this welcoming and inclusive school community’ and that ‘they feel safe, valued and supported’.

Sixth form provision was also recognised positively, with the school offering ‘a broad and well designed post‑16 curriculum, combining academic and vocational qualifications’ which helps create ‘suitable routes to positive future destinations’. Students benefit from strong support and enrichment, and ‘act as positive role models and contribute widely to the school’.

Under Ofsted’s new inspection framework, Highfields School was judged to be at Strong Standard for Achievement; Attendance and Behaviour; and Inclusion, and at Expected Standard for Curriculum and teaching; Leadership and Governance; Personal development and wellbeing; and Post-16 provision. Safeguarding standards were also met, with inspectors finding that any concerns are ‘actively identified, acted upon and managed’.

Headteacher Simon Cope said: “We are delighted that the Ofsted team recognised Highfields’ commitment to fostering a caring and aspirational culture where every child can succeed and realise their full potential.

“I personally am especially pleased that inspectors acknowledged the dedication and hard work of our staff in providing a well rounded education that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and character needed for future success.

“Our strong partnership with parents, the Trust, and Governors ensures that we continue to serve our community with purpose and integrity. We are immensely proud of the way we support each and every child to flourish”.

Councillor Jacqui Coogan, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, added: “This is a fantastic outcome for Highfields School. The report clearly shows a school where high expectations, strong relationships and a commitment to inclusion are helping pupils to thrive and achieve their very best.”
