Carers Week, which gets underway today (Monday 8 June, 2026), is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.
It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers, and to access much needed support.
The theme for Carers Week 2026 is ‘Building Carer Friendly Communities’, and the council has organised a series of activities throughout the week for carers to get involved in.
They include a Tea and Chat with the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Paul Singh, tomorrow (Tuesday), and a pub lunch on Thursday, both of which will give carers the chance to come together, enjoy food and drink, and connect with others who share similar experiences.
Meanwhile, experts from Manby Bowdler solicitors will be hosting a face to face Lasting Power of Attorney information session on Wednesday, and there will be an information event for young carers approaching adulthood on Friday with staff from Adult Social Care’s Early Support Service and the University of Wolverhampton available to provide advice and guidance.
To find out more about any of these events, please call 01902 553409.
Councillor Linda Leach, Cabinet Member for Adults, said: “We are on hand to give our city’s unpaid carers as much help as possible to carry out their vitally important role, so whether you are an adult or a young carer, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”
Councillor Jacqui Coogan, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, added: “There are thousands of unpaid carers in Wolverhampton who look after family members or friends who have a disability, a mental or physical illness, or simply need extra help as they grow older, and Carers Week is a chance for us all to recognise and celebrate their incredible hard work, dedication, and compassion.”
The council offers a range of assistance to people of any age who care for a friend, relative or neighbour, ensuring they are supported in their caring role, and have access to the services they need. It also provides practical information, guidance and advice on a range of matters including benefits and offer a range of other services including training in essential skills such as first aid.
